Top Five Holiday Traveling Tips (from a Family of Five: three kids, 10 and under!)

Traveling for the holidays can be stressful and exhausting. Here's some tips to save you some time.

1. Know the weather. Are you heading North? South? Do you need sandals and flip flops or extra socks and boots? Call your family and friends, research online, and check frequently. Weather can change in an instant. Be prepared for roadside emergencies in any weather condition.

2. Save money on clothing and items that are not typically worn in your region by shopping at thrift stores. For example, this holiday season we'll be heading north to New York. We've been shopping at the Salvation Army (on Wednesday's in our area clothing is 50% off!) and have gotten a ton of name brand sweaters for $3 or less! Most were only $1.50!!

3. Pack Snacks. I love the little snack sized zip lock bags because they're perfect for packing snacks for the car or plane. How annoying is it dragging the ginormous bag of pretzels out of the cloth shopping bag, and passing it over the baby's head to the big kids in the back? Pass back a small baggie with your child's favorite goodies, and save the mess, and hassle!

4. I know it sounds obvious, but bring something OTHER than something with WiFi to keep your children occupied. While the tablet or computer is a great way to keep the kids busy, there may not be a network signal, or a WiFi access on the go. I cannot tell you how many airports don't have free WiFi! Grab the old MP3 player or iPod, an extra set of headphones from the dollar store, a handful of coloring and activity books, and plenty of crayons. Even the big kids enjoy coloring in the car or plane, and it keeps little Johnny's hands away from his sister.

5. Play with your children- yes, even on the go. We love "Down By the Bay", and it helps our middle child with rhyming. Make them read signs, count billboards, look for flags. My children LOVE looking for flags and seeing who can find the most. If you're going to be flying, make silly faces, play tic tac toe, color with them. The memories you're making will last a lifetime!

These are the top five tips that I can offer you tonight. While I'm packing, I will be sure to brainstorm and come up with some new ideas. Feel free to comment and leave your travel tips below!

Baked Potato Soup in the Crock Pot

Baked potato soup is one of those delicious comfort foods, that can make any kind of a day so much better, with just one spoonful. Even more so, if you don't have to stand, mash, and cook for hours. I have a family of five, and tonight we had an extra house guest. I love making this soup, and in this recipe, I made a half of a crock full of soup. You can obviously cut down the ingredients if you have a smaller family.  Enjoy my take on Crock Pot Baked Potato Soup:

Here's what you need:
1 medium onion, diced
5-6 white potatoes, diced
1 8-12 oz package of turkey bacon
1 boxed carton of chicken broth
garlic powder (or fresh garlic, minced)
salt and pepper (about a tsp each..to taste)
1 cup heavy cream

Dice onions and place into crock pot.

Wash, peel, and dice potatoes and add to the slow cooker.

Add salt, pepper, garlic (or garlic powder).

Add the carton of chicken broth, cover and cook on low for 6 hours, or high for 3.

About 30 minutes before you're going to eat, lower the crock pot to "Keep Warm" if yours has that setting. Add about 1 cup of heavy cream. Use your handheld mixer to beat the soup slowly. Be careful, because it might splatter out if you're making a large quantity. Don't thoroughly blend, because you want to keep some lumps. It's not going to look pretty, but it tastes amazing!

Cook your turkey bacon until it's crispy. (Real bacon crisps quicker, but the picture above is turkey bacon!)

Serve with crumbled bacon, shredded cheese, and scallions.

Let Your Children PLAY!

So, the other day on my personal Facebook page, I wrote this:

It was by far one of the most liked statuses that didn't involve my kids in quite sometime.

But it was true.

All of the board games are starting to change.. Hasbro, what is wrong with you?! Ever hear the saying, "If it isn't broke, don't fix it!"?!  Isn't the point of Operation supposed to be that it's annoying, and frustrating, and fun, and AWESOME when you can finally figure out how to get that darn funny bone out without buzzing? Since 1965, right? Why the change now?

Now, as a mom of a child with special needs, I have to say, don't start attacking me about the fact that there's kids out there with poor dexterity, blah, blah, blah. The solution is simple- if it's too difficult for your kid, try something else. Try Perfection, or puzzles to help with fine motor skills, if they're young. I didn't try operation until Alex was much older than the 6 year age on the box. Be smart.

The people who commented agreed, too, stating that we are in an era of every kid being a winner, and others who expresses how sad it is that *this* is our future.

What happened to allowing your kids to play with worms, get skinned knees, and mud in their hair?

I consider myself an old school mom.. because I care about my kids, but I don't coddle my kids. They're going to get scraped, dirty, and germy. They're kids. It's their criteria. If they're exploring the world, and learning how to become well rounded individuals, they're not going to be clean, hand-sanitized, freaks who are a little too obsessive about scootering on the flat part of the sidewalk, and picking up the scooter every time there's a crack. FOR CRYING OUT LOUD PEOPLE?! If your kid does this, you need to shake them... or yourself. When we were kids, the world was different, yes. I'm not saying let your kids play unsupervised and shout from the door when it's time for little Johnny to come in and wash up- but let your kids play. Let them play hard. I start twitching every time little Janey up the road (she's not really named Janey) plays with my daughter.

Abbie loves to climb trees (in her dresses), and she digs in the dirt with her bare hands, and she likes to scooter up the sidewalk and doesn't flinch over the cracks. She's experiencing life.

When she falls and scrapes her leg, we don't run over and carry her in (unless she's really bad, c'mon, I'm not that cruel), we make her hobble in, and help her clean it. Then we snuggle on the couch, or she goes back out to play. The same way my mom did for me.

In the 70's, I might have been called a "refrigerator mom" because of the way strangers might perceive me in situations similar to that above. I would much rather be considered a Refrigerator Mom than a "Helicopter Mom"... At least then, I'd still be cool.

Elf on the Shelf: A Birthday Tradition

Birthdays are the number two (after Christmas, of course!) most requested time for The Elf on the Shelf to visit. In Santa’s Christmas village, the elves have their own special way of celebrating birthdays—a tradition that goes back thousands of years.  Now, at the request of children around the world, Santa has given special permission for his scout elves to share that tradition with the families who love them.  But an elf cannot come to a birthday party unless it is invited.  You can invite your elf online here.

On October 22, The Elf on the Shelf: A Birthday Tradition will be available! The Elf on the Shelf: A Birthday tradition tells the little-known story of the North Pole tradition and includes special instructions for families to invite their scout elf for a birthday visit. Written in the same signature rhyming style as the original title, the book set features the beautifully illustrated book and a Claus Couture Collection birthday outfit for the elf to wear to the celebration.

Grab your Elf on the Shelf: A Birthday Tradition, this Tuesday!  Look at how adorable their party outfits are!! Start a new tradition with your Elf this year.

Special thanks to Elf on the Shelf for allowing us to review the new Birthday Tradition set. We decided to spread some holiday cheer, and gave our sample to a single mom and her two beautiful children this holiday season.

Taking some time to re-think blogging..

I love blogging.. I always have. Through the years there has been really easy times to blog, and really-difficult-to-find-a-moment-to-breathe-nevermind-blog times, too.

I enjoy being a review blog and sharing with you all my opinions on products geared for the home and the family, including entertainment, toys, electronics, and more. I really, really enjoyed traveling and sharing the experiences I had in Cleveland, and in Orlando.

I need a blogging refresher. I need to set clear goals again, like I did when we first launched. I need to share personal stories again, and share more recipes. There's no better season than now. Come mid November, my blog is going to blow up- and I want you to be a part of it.

It might be quiet for the next month as we get used to our ABA (Applied Behaviorial Analyst) who will be coming into my home at least two days a week. I ask you to bare with me, as you have.. and to get ready. I'm even thinking of ripping down the blog design and getting something more.... Fresh.

In the busiest season of my life.

Svan Totseat, Where Have You Been My Whole Life?!

Very few products make me wish I had them ten years ago, when my oldest was just a baby. For the most part, I've made "it" work. I was a young mom, always on the go, with one child. Then with a newborn and a super active toddler. That super active toddler wouldn't stay in one place, if you paid him. Heck, there were days I didn't think super glue could keep that kid in one spot.

Going out to eat anywhere that high chairs weren't readily available was impossible. I steered far away from the mall, as well as popular luncheonettes that my girlfriends used to love to go to. Face it, nobody likes to eat anything when a toddler is trying to climb on the table, hide under the table cloth, or roll around under waiter's feet.. I was no exception.

As a mom of three kids, lunch took on a new meaning. It was a place to slow down and recenter a bit, instead of a rude interruption in the middle of a helter-skelter day.  It became a time of the day where all three of the kids could sit, mostly quiet, and I didn't have to worry who was where, doing what. I love lunch time, but I was still faced with similar problems finding high chairs readily available. There's a lot more restaurants and eateries that have high chairs, but my problem now was finding that a lot of those places had too many kids and not enough high chairs. What's a mom to do? You have two choices- pray to God that your child doesn't kamikaze off of the booster seat in a booth, or keep your kiddo in their stroller, and carve pieces of dried, stuck on pasta off of their pants, and the entire inside of the stroller fabric when you get home. If you opt for the second, you don't have anywhere to go between lunch and home.. if you go for the first, you're much braver than most people give you credit for!
So, I get this product announcement for this item called a Totseat, and I almost scroll over it, but something makes me stop. I read the title, "Durable Fabric Seat Safely Transforms Adult Chairs into the Perfect Seat for Babies and Toddlers", and snort, because- in my opinion- there is NOTHING that could have held my son into an adult seat as a baby. Being that I have a 16 month old, I figure what the heck, I'll give it a whirl.

My package came a few days later, and it arrived in a small, zippered plastic pouch. When you take it out, it has a fabric pouch that is perfect for sticking in your handbag or baby bag.  Now that I've been using it regularly, I figured out that if I attach a plastic link, (you know these links that you attach toys to, so when your kid flings it off of the stroller, it doesn't fall?), I can attach it to my stroller or baby bag easily, and don't have to dig for it!

Anyway! So, I tried the house chairs first. It worked like a charm. My little boy sat like he was a big man, at the table, and everything! I barely had to adjust it, and instantly, I was in love. So then I asked my friend Marissa to lunch. We decided to go to the dreaded mall. {Have I mentioned how much I hate the mall?} To the food court we went, on a mission to make it work.

We realized after we took the first picture, that we needed to adjust the position of the fabric, but as soon as we buttoned it, and adjusted the seat cummerbund, he looked much more comfortable. He even enjoyed his water! Who would have thought that at 15 months old, he would be able to sit in a metal mall chair, that was armless and had a big gap in the back, like a big kid, without falling off, or out!

For the first time since I had kids, I was able to sit in the mall, eat my lunch, drink my shake, and not have to scoop a child off of the floor ten trillion times, or worry about the condition of my stroller. I physically had moms and grandmothers stopping me, asking me what this was, and where they could get one, commenting on how *AMAZING* this invention is!

I shook my head and nodded, directing them to the Svan website. As I packed up my son, and strolled away, she showed me just how much he loves the Totseat, too!
To purchase Totseat for yourself, or for every mom of a rowdy toddler on your holiday shopping list, visit the Svan website HERE.

The Totseat is available in 6 different colors/patterns and is $35. Of all of the crazy baby gadgets on the market, this is one of only a handful that I've ever given the I-cannot-live-without-it, and wish-I-had-it-for-the-other-two-kids stamp of approval.

To stay up to date on all of the fun and funky Svan items, be sure to follow them on Twitter, "Like" their Facebook page, and check out their Pinterest page, too!

Special thanks to Svan and the PR company representing Svan for allowing us to review this awesome product, and share our opinions with our readers. No monetary compensation was received for this review. Our opinions are our own, your experience may differ. Do not leave any child unattended while strapped into the Totseat. Always supervise during use.

FREE Pillsbury Cinnamon Rolls at 7-11

The mornings just got a little sweeter at 7-Eleven stores with the introduction of a new Pillsbury Cinnamon Roll, the retailer’s first warm bakery offering and the first Pillsbury branded fresh-bakery item with a convenience retailer.

Available with hot foods as well as in the fresh bakery case at participating stores, 7-Eleven’s sweetly spiced version invokes the nostalgic, baked-at-home flavor of America’s favorite Pillsbury sweet roll. The suggested retail price is $1.69.

To encourage customers to sample, a limited-time coupon for a free cinnamon roll will be available on 7-Eleven’s app beginning Sept. 10. Other limited-time offers featuring the sweet pastry will continue in the coming weeks, and customers are encouraged to check their smartphones often for additional mobile coupons. All 7-Eleven app coupons are good at participating stores, while supplies last.

7-Eleven’s fresh food innovations team worked for more than a year on the development with Pillsbury to ensure consistent product quality. Prepared and baked fresh daily in local bakeries across the country, the cinnamon rolls are delivered overnight to stores before the morning coffee crowd arrives.

“Our goal in partnering with Pillsbury was to create an indulgent cinnamon roll that looked and tasted homemade,” said Kelly Buckley, 7-Eleven, Inc. vice president of fresh food innovation. “For more than 100 years, Pillsbury has been ‘the’ name in home-baking. Now, 7-Eleven can offer the homemade taste in a convenient, grab-and-go setting.”

During the morning rush, participating 7-Eleven stores can serve the cinnamon rolls warm in mini bakery boxes. Created just for the Pillsbury cinnamon roll, the microwave-safe boxes also are available at the bakery case for customers who choose to select an unheated roll to eat later. Rolls take just 10 seconds to heat in a microwave oven in the bakery boxes.

“We expect the Pillsbury cinnamon roll will be a hot-seller in the mornings when people are stopping by to grab a cup of coffee on their way to work or school,” Buckley said. “However, experience tells us that lots of our customers come into our stores in the afternoons and even late at night looking for a sweet and satisfying treat.”

Wearing red-checked oven mitts, the Poppin’ Fresh Pillsbury Doughboy character can be seen popping up on in-store signage to promote 7-Eleven’s first Pillsbury-branded fresh bakery item.

“Partnering with 7-Eleven gives General Mills an opportunity to bring the fresh-baked goodness of a ready-to-eat Pillsbury-branded cinnamon roll to millions of people,” said Randy Johnson, General Mills Inc. market manager. “I believe the aroma in the stores and rich taste of these warm cinnamon rolls will make them a hit with 7-Eleven’s customers.”

Mobile coupons – for a free cinnamon roll, 75-cent discount, or a free roll with the purchase of a medium coffee – will be available on 7-Eleven’s smartphone app now through the end of October.

Cinnamon isn’t the only spice at 7-Eleven ushering in cooler temperatures. It wouldn’t be fall without Pumpkin Spice, one of 7-Eleven’s customers’ favorite hot beverage flavors and back for a limited time. Customers can choose Pumpkin Spice-flavored lattes or brewed coffee. Even the creamer is in on the action, with International Delight Pumpkin Pie Spice flavor also available while supplies last.

“Pumpkin Spice Latte is a sign that autumn has unofficially arrived,” said Nancy Smith, 7-Eleven vice president of fresh foods merchandising. “Warm cinnamon rolls and hot pumpkin spice lattes and brewed coffees are seasonal comfort tastes at their best, whether heading out to work in the morning, a ballgame in the evening or as an afternoon treat.”

My Tween Stole from Me

Since our kids were babies, we've taught them to ask permission before they take something that is not theirs. We teach them to respect other people's things, and we encourage them to use their manner and say, "Please?", when they want something.

So why is it now, at ten years of age, I'm dealing with the unthinkable- my son is stealing from me.

At first it was little things, like food out of the fridge or pantry without permission. Okay, I know what you're going to say, "Every kid does that..it's not really stealing."

Then it moved to other little things, like gum from my purse without permission. Again, not a total travesty, but I made a big deal of it, because he went into my purse without permission, took something that didn't belong to him, and then tried to hide it. THEN when he got busted, he still tried to deny it, and say it wasn't him, despite the unusual overly minty freshness permeating from his mouth.

About six months ago, plus or minus a little, he took our debit card and charged $50 on the Wii for credits. My husband and I flipped out at him. We told him he was going to work it off, and we made him do as much manual labor that we could find and grounded him from everything about a week. I was so angry with him, and disappointed in him.

It stopped for a little while after that, but about a month or two ago, it started again. The lying about stuff "he didn't do" (which he most certainly did), and the taking gum, food, etc, without permission. It was happening more often, and it bothered me. We sat him down and discussed the whole thing with him, explaining how taking ANYTHING without permission is considered stealing, and when you're bigger and caught stealing you can go to jail. He apologized, and we moved along.

This morning, I checked my balance on my bank account, because I'm waiting for an auto-bill payment to hit, and I noticed two charges for Club Penguin. I did not purchase a membership, my husband didn't- so that left the only person who was on the computer- my son.

My husband confronted him while I was in the bathroom, and he denied it, until my husband told him it showed on the bank account. He took out my debit card, placed the order, put it back in my wallet, and back into my purse and went along- life as normal, and didn't tell me about it.

I don't know if I'm more ticked off that he went into my pocketbook without permission, used my card without permission, or tried to lie and deny that he did it!!!

I vented to a few friends and a couple of family members, and they said that they would be pissed. A few told me that every tween/teen goes through it at some point or another. I'm angry! I'm hurt! I'm incredibly disappointed.

I had two people ask me if I thought that with his processing disorders and the Autism, if he really, truly understood what he did. I don't know. I truly feel like he 150% knew what he was doing, knew that he'd probably get caught, and just didn't care. He's got such an entitlement attitude lately, I just don't know what to do.

The approval for the home ABA services can't come soon enough, because I'm on the verge of a complete meltdown on my end. The point of my rant is to ask you, my readers, if YOUR child or anyone you know has ever done anything like this? If so, how did you handle it? How do I handle this. Right now he's grounded, in his room, and not allowed to come out unless he has to eat or use the bathroom. I didn't raise my boy to be a thief. Help!!!!

Mombo takes Nursing Pillows to the Next Level! *Review*

This post brought to you by Comfort and Harmony. All opinions are 100% mine.

Recently I was given the opportunity to review the Mombo from Comfort & Harmony, the makers of Bright Starts products. When I opened the email, I thought the same thing as you just did- what the heck is a Mombo?!

  mombo-nursing-pillow

Aside from a clever sounding name, the Mombo is a brand new nursing pillow that every parent should try! Plus, we really like the packaging, because it says our name on it... sort of.

Mombo-4-mom-and-baby

Okay, not really, but it's still attractive! Available exclusively at Babies R Us, the Mombo nursing pillow retails from about $30-55, depending on which pillow you choose, if it's already got a slip cover, and what type of slip cover you choose. They have one with taggies on it, fun and funky patterns, as well as calm, soothing colors for both boys and girls!

My little one isn't nursing anymore, but we used to nurse. We made it six months- the longest for any of my kids! I was ecstatic that I made it that long. Unfortunately, due to food allergies and sensitivites, we had to stop, but we still enjoy snuggle time- despite the fact that my little man is a year old already!

When we received the opportunity to review this new nursing pillow I jumped at it. I had used both of the other popular brands of nursing pillows and they did the trick.. but only "well enough". With the one brand, I found myself rolling it up and folding it over. The other brand had velcro, so I liked that, but I couldn't use it when I wanted to lay baby down on the floor, like the first one. It also felt way too stiff sometimes. I couldn't find a happy medium.

When our mombo came in the mail, I couldn't wait to open it! Mombo has a unique shape (for your arms to fit perfectly while nursing!) and a two-sided design called Firm2Soft. Basically, it's got two sides to it, a softer, more pillowy side that's perfect for tummy time, and a more firm, but still comfortable side, for stability when nursing. It's also got a spot for you to put this little pod into it which makes your Mombo gently vibrate. That would have been SO helpful for my coliky baby!! Mombo is the only nursing pillow on the market with removable, soothing vibrations.

Now, like I said before, my baby isn't of nursing age, but one of my very dear friends is due in just a couple of weeks, so I can't wait to let her really try this product out. For the time being, here's a few pictures of my handsome little man, hanging out with his Mombo!

Be sure to follow Comfort & Harmony on Facebook to stay up to date on new products, slip covers, and to show of your bundle of joy on their wall! Find Comfort & Harmony on Twitter to get great tips, interact with the brand, ask questions, and more!

Special thanks to Comfort & Harmony for allowing us to review this product.
