Am I screwing this up? Thoughts on Parenting..

When you have kids, nobody gives you a training booklet or a manual on how not to eff it up. They should, but they don't. Okay, in reality, I know that there's no cookie cutter "one-size-fits-most" approach to parenting, but the bottom line is- sometimes the job just sucks.

There are definite seasons of parenting, too. One season, you look back at it, and say, this was a great season in parenting.. our kids aren't schmucks, they didn't argue with each other a ton, and nobody at school was bit, hit or kicked. You smile, and pat yourself on the back a little, and move into the next season, hoping it can only be as successful.

Little do you know, you're about to walk into the most hellish experience of your life. Your teenager talks back, got his first 2 cavities, and his first F on his report card. Your 10 year old {who is normally well behaved and follows directions} decided she wants to see just how much attitude she can dish before mommy pulls out her own hair, and the toddler. Oh, the toddler.

Because he is potty training, you have to stop at every single potty, at every single public place you stop for several weeks.  This is your third time potty training, so it shouldn't be "new news" but somehow, you don't recall it being *this* bad. I know if that's my only complaint, I should rejoice and be glad, but I'm really tired of taking the tour of local public potties.

Did I mention the teenager got an "F"??? What class did he get an F in? Oh, you know, just 'Business Tech', the class that when he started and they handed out the syllabus and it said, "In this class we will learn how to use Power Point, Excel, and sharpen our typing skills", and your son is the smart ass that interrupts the class to say, "I've known how to use those programs since 1st grade." Yeah... that's the class he failed.

Now, I'm an "old lady" by my kids standards, but it wasn't too long ago when I was in 7th grade. I had straight A's and busted my ass to get them. I was afraid if I didn't my parents would kill me. Still to this day, I have no idea if that was something they said to me or instilled in me somehow, but what I would do to instill it in this boy!! He is SO smart- "gifted" actually- but sometimes he acts like the dullest crayon in the box, if you know what I'm saying. He's taken his autism diagnosis and truly made growth in leaps and bounds.. With the help of his ABA and his counselor, his behavior at school has improved. When the ABA is here, he generally does well, but when they're not, he becomes an entitled little shit.

The disrespect is what kills me the most. I try to raise all of my kids not to be disrespectful.. I have no idea if this is "the age", "the autism", or just my son. Either way, it sucks.

I know from experience that it is just a season, and that "this too shall pass", but for the love of God, it's nothing but chaos! I sent a snap to my friend on snap chat last night and said... "there's not enough wine in the house for this...." and it has never been more truer.

Please someone who has an older son, or daughter, tell me that this is just a phase, too???

That place between being a kid and a grown-up (aka My Daughter Snuck Makeup on This Morning)

This morning was rainy and nasty, and we missed the bus. It was one of those days where you just wanted to stay in your blankly and read a good book... so I got it. I told my daughter to hurry in the bathroom, and I reluctantly dragged my feet getting myself and my little guy ready. Knowing that I took longer than I should have, and got two ready, I gave a shout to the bathroom, and told my daughter to hustle and get in the car. She hurried past me, and scooped up her brother, telling him to snuggle with her so he didn't get wet.

We squeak into the car and head off to school. The kids are both in the back, and we head up the road to school. I realize that she didn't grab a granola or anything, so I decide to hit the fast food place near her school. She climbs into the front seat to eat, and looks at me.

Pure ivory skin, dark brown hair, rosy cheeks, slightly pinker, shimmery lips. Gosh, my daughter is beautiful. ....Wait, my daughter's wearing makeup!?!

While I'm a bit....flustered... I take a breath and ask her about it, without sounding like I'm angry, (I made sure to pay attention to my tone), so her feelings don't get hurt. She shrinks down, all bashful and doesn't talk.

Honey, tell me? Nothing.
Sweetheart? I'm just wondering, because you don't normally want to wear makeup.. Nothing.

I swear it felt like 3 hours.

In my head I am trying to run every scenario through my head. She's dealt with mean girls, and with provocative girls, she's dealt with bully boys, and boys who swoon at her desk. Is it a boy? Is it a girl? Is it a mean girl teasing her, because Jesus, if it is I will....

...Sigh. I don't know, mommy.

Tell me, honey?

Well, I've noticed that sometimes the girls who wear makeup get the boys to look at them and then they like them.

Oh honey!

So we spent the next several minutes talking about boys, and girls, and makeup, and being ready to wear makeup, and how the boys usually like the girls who don't wear a ton of makeup more, and how she's beautiful without it. We talked about when she *is* allowed to wear makeup (holidays, dances, special events), how when you're little, you want to grow up, and when you're older you wish you were young again, and how she's got the rest of her life to wear makeup, and that in 5th grade, if she still feels like she wants to wear makeup, I have no problem with her wearing lip gloss.

She wipes her mouth after eating her sandwich, (just as a natural habit) and I notice the shimmer is almost off. There she is... My beautiful girl, don't be in such a rush to grow up! I love you, just the way you are.. always and forever.

Don't Fret The Sweat!

Unilever, the makers of Degree, Dove and Suave deodorant offers support for these difficult times.. You know the times where your tween or almost tween starts to have funny smells. {Yeah, I've totally hit that time in my life, and I cried when I bought my son his first stick of deodorant a few weeks ago!!}

The tween years are full of changes. Whether or not parents are ready, their kids’ bodies are trying to tell them something. Increased hormones are causing noticeable differences like growth spurts and strange new odors. But don’t let the unexpected stink scare you; it’s just a sign of great things to come.

Unilever - the maker of Degree, Dove and Suave deodorants - wants to ensure parents and kids remain cool, calm and confident throughout the day - especially during those sweat-inducing moments.

Check out Facebook.com/DontFretTheSweat for money saving offers and expert tips, tools and real life stories about how parents are communicating and transitioning their tweens into confident and self-reliant teens.

So, keep your fingers crossed for me, as my son delves head first into the world of smelly pits and crazy hygeine habits. If I make it through the smell coming off of his feet right now, I can survive anything!!

Special thanks to the One2One Network for presenting me with the opportunity to share this promotion with my readers. By posting this article, I have been entered to win a gift card.

Avon Gifts Make Perfect Stocking Stuffers! Review + Giveaway

I remember dreaming when I was younger, about how I was going to be a professional business woman with a porcelain face and a perfect pencil skirt, with matching jacket, running through the streets of New York City, on my way to some important meeting.

Then I grew up, married and then I decided to be a stay at home mom. It's one of the greatest jobs in the world, but although I'm not dashing to and from business meetings, I am dashing between the car-loop, grocery store, bank, PTA meetings, and random, miscellaneous events for both of the kids. I'm not doing it in a glorious business suit, (or with my perfect face on), but I am doing it.

This year I made a resolution to start wearing makeup more often. It was actually part of the Fly Lady series that we had at the school last year, and I really made a lot of personal progress. In high school and college I always left the house with some makeup on..yeah.. not so much anymore.

The one time of the year you could always count on me looking "dolled up" is during the holidays. I have great eyes, and really love experimenting with new products. A few months ago I purchased the PERFECT WEAR Eyewriter Liquid Eye Liner in Beaming Bronze from Avon.

I absolutely love this eye liner. I can apply it thick and dramatic, or thin and sleek. The bronze color gives a great dimension to my eyes, and every time I wear it I get a ton of compliments! The retail price is only $8, and I happened to get it on sale, so it was even more affordable. I am absolutely in love with this product and cannot gush about it enough, without it sounding fake. Let's just say.. if you are in the market for a great liquid liner, give this bad boy a shot!

Marissa adores the Foot Works line from Avon. Foot Works are products that pampers your feet the same way a pedicure does.. without the expense. Plus, she feels the quality of the them are "more than spa quality", and the results last even longer than professional pedi's do!

During the Holiday season, I tend to purchase a lot of stuff from Avon. They carry so much more than makeup. They carry spa products, winter wear, jewelry, fragrances, and even stuff for the men and kids in our life. Their prices make it easy to make a dollar stretch, and online there is usually some sort of discount code or free shipping promotion, which is amazing this time of the year.

They even have toys, stocking stuffers, and holiday themed items, as well. Everything on my nieces wishlists have to do with beauty products this year; teens and tweens will be delighted with something glittery in their stocking or under the tree from Avon.

When was the last time you looked at an Avon catalog? I could seriously get lost in it, they offer so much!

Our Avon consultant wanted to spread holiday cheer and has offered one lucky reader their chance to WIN a $15 Avon Gift Certificate!
